Hathras Stampede: Satsang Organiser Madhukar in judicial custody amid political controversy

Dev Prakash Madhukar, the main organizer of the 'satsang' where a tragic stampede claimed 121 lives in Hathras, has been taken into custody by Hathras police. Madhukar, also known as the 'mukhya sevadar', was apprehended after being on the run since July 2. The police arrested him late Friday night following his involvement as the prime suspect named in the FIR lodged at Sikandra Rao police station.

Police investigation and political links

Hathras Superintendent of Police Nipun Agarwal confirmed that Madhukar had obtained permission for the satsang from local authorities but was now being questioned about his connections with Baba (also known as Narayan Sarkar Hari or Suraj Pal Singh) and other members of the organizing committee. The police had offered a reward of ₹1 lakh for information leading to Madhukar's arrest. Authorities are also scrutinizing his financial transactions and call records as part of their investigation.

Madhukar's role in managing major activities of Bhole Baba in Hathras, along with his recent contacts with political parties, has come under scrutiny. The police are delving into his financial dealings and communication records to uncover further details.

Judicial Inquiry Commission's role

A Judicial Inquiry Commission, established by the Uttar Pradesh government and led by former Allahabad High Court judge Brijesh Kumar Srivastava, has commenced its investigation into the stampede incident. The commission, accompanied by former IAS officer Hemant Rao and former IPS officer Bhavesh Kumar Singh, visited the site to inspect all relevant aspects, including entry and exit points. Justice Srivastava emphasized that the commission aims to thoroughly question all individuals involved and will submit its comprehensive report within two months, as mandated.
